There’s nothing more frustrating on a cool North Texas evening than walking up to your gas fireplace, pressing the ignition button, and hearing… nothing. No click. No flame. Just silence. If your gas fireplace isn’t igniting, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most common service calls we receive from DFW homeowners, especially at the start of fireplace season each fall and after the long, dusty Texas summer.

Why Gas Fireplace Ignition Fails: The 7 Most Common Causes
1. Thermocouple or Thermopile Failure
This is the #1 cause of gas fireplace ignition failure, and we see it constantly in DFW homes — especially units that are 5–10+ years old. The thermocouple is a small safety sensor that sits directly in the pilot flame. Its job is to generate a small electrical voltage (millivolts) that tells your gas valve it’s safe to stay open. When it fails or gets coated in dust and debris — and North Texas is not short on either — the valve shuts off and the fireplace won’t light.
A healthy thermocouple should generate 25–35 millivolts. Anything below 20mV and your fireplace will have trouble staying lit. A failed or dirty thermocouple is an inexpensive fix, but the diagnosis and replacement should be done by a certified technician to ensure your gas valve isn’t also compromised.
2. Pilot Light Is Out
Many older gas fireplaces (and even some newer ones) use a standing pilot light — a small flame that burns continuously. If that pilot goes out due to a draft, a momentary gas interruption, or a spider building a nest in your gas orifice (yes, this happens in Texas — yellow sac spiders are notorious for this), your fireplace simply has nothing to ignite the main burner.
You can often relight a standing pilot following the manufacturer’s instructions on the control panel door — but if it won’t stay lit after 3–4 attempts, that points back to a thermocouple issue rather than a simple relight problem.
3. Dead Batteries in the Remote or Wall Switch
This sounds too simple, but we make this house call more than you’d think. If your fireplace uses a remote control or an electronic wall switch (IPI — Intermittent Pilot Ignition system), dead batteries in the remote receiver module will prevent the entire system from functioning. The receiver box is usually located behind the lower louver panel. Replace the batteries (typically AA or 9V), and many homeowners find their “broken” fireplace suddenly works perfectly.
4. Gas Supply Issues
Before assuming the fireplace itself is broken, verify your gas supply. Check that:
- The gas shutoff valve behind or beneath the fireplace is fully open (handle parallel to the pipe = open)
- Other gas appliances in your home (stove, water heater) are working normally
- Your gas account is current and there’s no neighborhood-wide service interruption
In DFW, gas pressure fluctuations — particularly during extreme cold snaps like the ones North Texas occasionally experiences — can temporarily affect appliance performance. If your neighbors are also having issues, it’s an Atmos Energy supply problem, not a fireplace problem.
5. Igniter Module Failure (IPI Systems)
If your fireplace has an IPI (Intermittent Pilot Ignition) system — meaning the pilot only lights on demand rather than burning continuously — the electronic igniter module can fail. You’ll often hear a clicking sound but no pilot flame appears. This typically means either the igniter electrode is cracked or misaligned, the spark gap is incorrect, or the control module itself has failed.
Per manufacturer specs from leading brands like Heat & Glo, Majestic, and Valor, the igniter electrode tip-to-pilot assembly gap should be approximately 1/8 inch (3mm). Any wider and it won’t spark reliably. Any narrower and it may not light the gas efficiently.
6. Dirty or Clogged Burner Orifice
The small brass orifice that meters gas flow to your pilot or main burner can become partially blocked by spider webs, dust, or mineral deposits — particularly in fireplaces that sit unused through the hot Texas spring and summer. A partially blocked orifice produces a weak, unstable flame that won’t properly heat the thermocouple, creating an intermittent ignition problem that’s maddening to diagnose without the right equipment.
We clean orifices as part of every annual gas fireplace service — it’s a small step that prevents a lot of frustrating no-light calls in October and November when DFW homeowners finally fire up their units for the first time since February.
7. Gas Valve Failure
The gas valve is the most expensive component in this list, but it’s also the least common failure point in properly maintained fireplaces. A failed gas valve won’t allow gas to flow regardless of thermocouple signal. If a technician has already ruled out thermocouple, pilot, batteries, and gas supply issues, the valve is the likely culprit. Per NFPA 54 (National Fuel Gas Code) guidelines, gas valve repairs and replacements must be performed by a licensed professional — this is not a DIY repair.
What You Can Safely Check Yourself
Before calling a technician, here’s a quick self-check that’s safe for any homeowner:
- Check batteries — Replace the batteries in your remote and/or the receiver module behind the lower louver panel.
- Verify the gas valve is open — Locate the manual shutoff (usually behind or below the fireplace). Handle parallel to pipe = open.
- Attempt a manual pilot relight — Follow the instructions on the control panel door. Hold the pilot button for 30–45 seconds after ignition to allow the thermocouple to heat up.
- Check your circuit breaker — Some gas fireplaces have an electronic blower or ignition system on a dedicated circuit. A tripped breaker will kill the whole unit.
- Look for obvious obstructions — Peer into the firebox for visible debris, spider webs, or anything blocking the burner ports.
If none of these resolve the issue — or if you smell gas at any point during the process — stop immediately, ventilate the area, and call your gas utility and a professional technician.

NFPA 211 — the Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances — recommends annual inspection and cleaning of all heating appliances, including gas fireplaces. A Level 1 inspection covers the firebox, venting system, gas components, and safety controls.
