Chimney cap installation & replacement
A chimney cap keeps rain, squirrels, birds, embers and downdrafts out of an open flue, and in DFW it’s the cheapest fix on the whole chimney. Texas Grill Clean installs and replaces stainless chimney caps from $99 in Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Southlake and across the metroplex, plus chase covers, spark arrestors, animal guards and the crown or flashing repair underneath. Same veteran-owned team that cleans DFW grills, since 2009. Call (817) 791-4606.
Same crew, second service line. The veteran-owned team that cleans DFW grills also sweeps chimneys, services fireplaces, caps flues and clears dryer vents — operating under our sister company 1st Choice Residential (TX license #135315, serving Dallas–Fort Worth since 2009). One phone number: (817) 791-4606. One-year workmanship warranty on labor.
How much does a chimney cap cost in Dallas–Fort Worth?
Estimates start at $99 for a standard single-flue stainless cap with spark-arrestor mesh, installed. Multi-flue caps, custom covers for wide crowns and chase covers for prefab chimneys are quoted after we measure — an odd flue and a three-flue stone chimney in Southlake aren’t the same job. You get the number in writing before we’re on the roof.
| Service | Typical starting price | Time on site |

| Single-flue stainless cap, installed | from $99 | under an hour |

What does an open flue actually let in?
An uncapped flue is an open pipe pointed at the Texas sky. Every storm sends water down onto the damper, the firebox and the liner — rusted dampers, soaked firebrick and that musty smell on humid days all start there. Every spring sends a squirrel, a raccoon or a chimney swift looking for a hollow tree. And a flue with no spark mesh drops embers onto a July-dry roof. A fitted cap closes all three doors at once.
Stainless or galvanized, and why anchoring matters
Half the cap work we do is replacing rusted galvanized caps from the hardware store, friction-fit from a ladder. North Texas hail and straight-line wind find those every spring. We fit the cap to the actual flue and fasten it to the tile or crown so it stays put. Gas fireplace vents need a listed cap that matches the vent type to keep the draft right — we confirm the correct one rather than putting a wood-stove cap on a gas flue.
What’s included?
- Measure the flue. Exact dimensions and flue type — the difference between fitted and flying off.
- Look at the top. Crown, tiles and upper masonry photographed while we’re up there. A cap on a cracked crown is a bandage on a broken bone, so if the crown needs work we tell you the order and why.
- Install and anchor. Old hardware off, new stainless cap mechanically fastened, draft and fit confirmed.
- Photos. Before-and-after shots of your chimney top, no ladder required to check our work.
Animal in the chimney? That’s the same visit.
Almost every wildlife call we take in DFW started as an open flue or a rusted chase cover. We remove raccoons, squirrels, opossums, snakes, birds and bats humanely — one-way doors and hand removal, no poison, no smoke-outs — for $180 to $560 depending on the animal, access and time on site, and you get the number before we start. Then we clean out the nesting material and cap or screen the opening, because trapping the animal and leaving the hole means you’re calling somebody again next spring. Active chimney swift nests are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so those wait until the young fledge. Bat exclusion is scheduled outside the May-to-mid-August pup season that Texas Parks and Wildlife asks operators to avoid.
Signs your flue is unprotected
- Dripping or water sounds in the fireplace when it rains.
- Rust streaks running down the outside of the chimney from the top.
- Twigs, leaves or nesting debris in the firebox.
- Scratching or chirping in the flue at dusk.
- A cap that’s tilted, dented or gone after a hail storm.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a chimney cap cost in Dallas–Fort Worth?
Estimates start at $99 for a standard single-flue stainless cap, installed. Multi-flue, custom-fabricated and chase covers depend on size and material and are quoted after we measure.
Does my chimney really need a cap?
Yes. Without one, rain goes straight down the flue onto the damper and firebox, animals move in, and downdrafts push cold air and smells into the house. It’s the cheapest protection a chimney can have.
Stainless or galvanized — does it matter?
A lot. Galvanized caps rust through in a few Texas summers. Stainless lasts decades. We install stainless by default because replacing rusted galvanized caps is half our cap work.
My cap blew off in a storm. Is that normal?
It usually means it was undersized, corroded at the fasteners, or held on by friction. A cap sized to the flue and mechanically anchored to the tile or crown handles DFW wind. Hail damage is often insurable — keep the photos.
What’s a chase cover?
The flat metal lid on top of a factory-built (prefab) chimney’s wood-framed chase. Builder-grade galvanized covers rust at the seam and drip into the firebox around year fifteen; a stainless replacement fixes it for good.
There’s an animal in my chimney right now. What do I do?
Don’t light a fire and don’t try to smoke it out. Call us. We remove raccoons, squirrels, opossums, snakes, birds and bats humanely ($180–$560, number before we start), clean up, and cap or screen the opening so it doesn’t repeat. Active chimney swift nests are federally protected, so those wait for fledging; bat exclusion is scheduled outside the May-to-mid-August pup season per Texas Parks and Wildlife guidance.
How long does cap installation take?
Standard caps go on in under an hour, usually the same visit as the quote. Custom and multi-flue caps need a measuring visit, fabrication, then a short install.
