To clean an Alfresco grill, let it cool completely, flip the ceramic briquette trays upside down, and run the burners on high for 30 minutes to burn off the grease. Let it cool again, scrub the trays, empty the drip tray, and hand-clean the 304 stainless with the grain. Never put liquid on a Sear-Zone IR burner.
Alfresco grills show up in a lot of the outdoor kitchens we service in Southlake, Colleyville, and Frisco. They are built heavy and they last. But they don’t clean like a Weber or a Blaze, and homeowners who treat them the same way tend to wreck expensive parts. Here’s how the grill is actually built and what that means for cleaning it.
What Makes an Alfresco Grill Different From Other Gas Grills?
An Alfresco is a briquette grill, not a flame-tamer grill, and that changes almost every step of the cleaning. Where most gas grills use angled stainless heat plates over the burners, Alfresco puts stainless briquette trays filled with ceramic briquettes above side-ported U-burners. Those briquettes hold and spread the heat. They are not an accessory.
According to the Alfresco ALXE Care and Use Manual, each U-burner is rated at 27,500 BTU, and the manual states the briquette tray “is a fundamental part for the performance of the grill. Do not cook on the grill without them.” The same manual rates the Sear-Zone IR burner at 27,500 BTU as well.
So an Alfresco cleaning has four zones, not two: the grates, the ceramic briquettes and their trays, the burners and igniters underneath, and the infrared components (Sear-Zone V-grate and the rotisserie back burner). Each one has its own rules.
How Do You Clean Alfresco Ceramic Briquettes?
Flip the briquette assembly upside down and run the grill on high for 30 minutes. That is Alfresco’s own self-cleaning method, straight from the manual. Most owners never learn this, which is why we pull so many briquette trays that are welded shut with carbon.
- Shut off the gas and let the grill cool completely. Never handle hot trays.
- Lift off the grill racks and set them aside.
- Lift out each briquette assembly (tray and briquettes together) and turn it upside down in the firebox.
- Light the burners and run them on high for 30 minutes with the hood closed. The grease burns off the briquette faces.
- Let everything cool again, then return the assemblies flat side down on their support ledges. They must sit level and not rock.
- Scrub the stainless trays themselves when they need it, with a nylon pad and hot soapy water, after they are cold.
- Inspect the briquettes as you go. Chips and small cracks are fine. Briquettes that crumble in your hand are done and need replacing.
Grill racks come clean easiest right after cooking, while they are still hot. Alfresco recommends a brass-bristle brush dipped in hot soapy water. The steam softens what’s stuck on. Let the grill go cold first and you double the work.
How Do You Clean the Sear-Zone IR Burner Without Wrecking It?
Never clean the V-grate with any liquid while it is sitting on the grill. Alfresco prints this as a formal notice in the manual, and it adds that water damage is not covered by the warranty. Liquid that gets into the ceramic face of an infrared burner can crack it permanently.
The correct sequence is heat first, brush second. Run the IR burner through its burn-off period so the V-grate largely self-cleans. Let it cool. Then lift the grate out of the grill and brush the burned debris off away from the burner. If the grate needs a wet clean, it happens off the grill, on a bench, and it goes back dry.
The rotisserie back burner is the same idea. Alfresco notes the stainless directly above the rotisserie burner will darken to a deep blue after the first use. That’s a normal property of type 304 stainless, not damage, and no amount of scrubbing will take it out. If your rotisserie itself isn’t turning, that’s a different problem, and we covered it in grill rotisserie not working.
How Often Should an Alfresco Grill Be Cleaned in DFW?
Racks after every cook, drip tray after every use, briquette burn-off every four to six cooks, and one full teardown deep clean a year. North Texas is harder on outdoor kitchens than most of the country: spring pollen, hard water on the sprinklers, and 100-degree summers that keep grease liquid and creeping.
| Task | How Often | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Brush grill racks | After every cook, while hot | Carbon bonds to stainless once it cools |
| Empty and wipe the drip tray | After every use, per Alfresco | Standing grease in the tray is a fire hazard |
| Briquette burn-off (flip method) | Every 4 to 6 cooks | Restores even heat and reduces flare-ups |
| Stainless exterior wipe-down | Monthly | DFW hard water etches the finish if left |
| Full teardown: burners, orifices, igniters, firebox | Once or twice a year | Spiders, blocked ports, and hidden grease |
If you cook more than twice a week, or your grill sits near sprinkler overspray, move the stainless wipe-down to every two weeks. Our hard water spot removal guide covers the DFW-specific part of that.
What Cleaning Mistakes Can Void Alfresco Coverage?
Four of them are named directly in the manual: water on the IR burner, aluminum foil in the firebox, over-pressurizing the regulator, and chlorine cleaners on the stainless.
- Foil. Alfresco says not to use aluminum foil to line the grill racks or the drip tray, because it can “severely upset combustion.” Foil is the single most common thing our crew pulls out of a neglected built-in.
- Water on infrared. Water damage is excluded from the warranty. This is why we never pressure wash an Alfresco firebox, and why we wrote can you pressure wash a grill.
- Over pressure. The manual warns that exposure above 69 inches water column permanently damages the gas regulator and that over-pressure damage is not covered.
- Bleach. Household bleaches contain sodium hypochlorite, which pits stainless steel. If any gets on the grill, rinse it off immediately with clean water.
- Rough igniter handling. Alfresco notes that mishandling an electrode can crack its ceramic body and cause all of the igniters to fail. It’s a cheap part that turns into an expensive callback.
Worth knowing what you’re protecting: Alfresco’s residential warranty is a limited lifetime warranty on stainless steel parts including stainless burners and standard round grates, a five-year warranty on the stainless briquette trays, gas valves and drip pans, and a full two-year warranty on all parts and labor. Cleaning your grill the wrong way is a fast way to give that up.
Should You Deep Clean an Alfresco Yourself or Call Someone?
The routine work is yours. The annual teardown is worth handing off, because it involves pulling burners off live gas orifices. Brushing grates, emptying the drip tray, and running the briquette burn-off are all homeowner jobs. Removing burners means shutting off the supply, clearing the electrode without cracking it, and re-seating each burner perfectly centered on its orifice before anything gets relit.
That last part is where the risk sits. According to the NFPA Home Grill Fires report, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 10,600 home grill fires per year from 2014 through 2018, and failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to those fires.
Texas Grill Clean does full grill restoration and deep cleaning on built-in Alfresco units, including briquette tray service, burner and orifice cleaning, igniter checks, and stainless steel restoration. Deep cleans start at $239. If something isn’t lighting or heating right, that’s gas grill repair territory, and we handle that too. Full pricing is on our pricing page, and coverage is listed on our service areas page, including grill cleaning in Southlake.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you wash Alfresco ceramic briquettes with water?
You can, but only after they are completely cold and removed from the grill. Scrub them with a nylon pad, rinse with clean water, and let them dry fully before putting them back. Alfresco’s preferred method is the dry burn-off instead: flip the assembly upside down and run the burners on high for 30 minutes.
How do you know when Alfresco briquettes need replacing?
Replace them when they start crumbling. A few chips, cracks, or nicks across a set of briquettes will not hurt performance. Briquettes that break apart when you handle them, or that have gone soft and greasy all the way through, no longer hold heat evenly and will cause hot and cold spots across the grate.
Why does the stainless above my Alfresco rotisserie burner look blue?
That dark blue discoloration is normal. Alfresco states in its manual that the stainless adjacent to and above the rotisserie burner will darken after the first use, and that this is a property of the type 304 stainless steel used in the grill. It is not damage and it does not affect operation.
Can I use oven cleaner inside my Alfresco grill?
No. Caustic oven cleaners attack the stainless finish and can damage the ceramic components in the briquettes and infrared burners. Use hot soapy water, a nylon or brass brush, and heat. Avoid anything containing chlorine bleach, which pits stainless steel even in diluted form.
How long does a professional Alfresco deep clean take?
Plan on two to four hours for a built-in Alfresco, depending on size and how long it’s been since the last service. That covers pulling grates, briquette trays, and burners, cleaning the firebox and drip tray, checking igniters and orifices, and polishing the stainless. Larger units with a Sear-Zone and side burners take longer.
Does cleaning my own Alfresco grill void the warranty?
Routine cleaning does not void anything. Specific damage does. Alfresco excludes water damage to infrared burners and over-pressure damage to the regulator, and its warranty does not cover defects caused by improper maintenance or service. Follow the manual’s methods and your coverage stays intact.
Do you service Alfresco grills outside of Dallas-Fort Worth?
